Argentina's Copa America campaign will take place on Tuesday 15 June 2021 at 05:00 WIB with a hard test in the form of an opener against regional neighbors Chile at the Estadio Nilton Santos Rio de Janeiro.
Argentina comes into this tournament unbeaten since 2019. However, the national team has not managed to win the Copa America since 1993, almost thirty years ago.
Since the country's early elimination of the 2018 World Cup under Jorge Sampaoli against France, Argentina have come a long way under new head coach Lionel Scaloni and big hopes come into this tournament.
Strong favorites in Group B, consisting of the continent's southern nations, Argentina will have to pick up points against the likes of Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia if they are to progress to the next round.
However, La Albiceleste first and foremost face Chile, the team who made life very difficult for Scaloni's men a few days ago when they held to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifying match.
Although Argentina looked much more complete, Scaloni's team struggled to crush their Chilean opponents.
A dramatic 2-2 draw with Colombia last week saw La Albiceleste go into this tournament without winning a single game in 2021.
Winners of back-to-back Copa America in 2015 and 2016, Chile came to this tournament only to win the third title in their history.
Even though half a decade has passed since their last title, Chile's starting 11 remains the same, with longtime guards Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas leading the line and Claudio Bravo, Gary Medel and Mauricio Isla filling the defence.
Head coach Martin Lasarte doesn't seem too concerned about his aging squad and will capitalize on this fan-favorite talent to win back the title from holders and hosts Brazil.
Following their draw with Argentina earlier this month, Chile were held back by Bolivia to a 1-1 draw a few days ago, with midfielder Erick Pulgar scoring for La Roja.
Much like their neighbors Argentina, Chile find themselves blowing hot and cold ahead of this tournament, and Lasarte will know his team will need to up the ante if they are to achieve anything this summer.
Scaloni announced a strong squad this week that includes the likes of Papu, Angel Correa, Angel Di Maria and Sergio Aguero alongside megastar Lionel Messi.
Notable absences from the squad include promising Aston Villa striker Emiliano Buendia and highly rated Sevilla forward Lucas Ocampos.
Even with the addition of Aguero, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez can still partner Messi in attack.
As for Chile, Lasarte is expected to pick four at the back as he did against La Albiceleste earlier this month, partnering Medel with Guillermo Maripan.
Pulgar and Charles Aranguiz of Bayer Leverkusen are likely to provide cover for the defense in midfield.
